Silver Medallion IRB Driver

Award Summary:

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

Unit/s of Competency:

  • PUAEQU001B - Prepare, maintain and test response equipment
  • PUASAR001B - Undertake a rescue operation in a small powercraft

Award:

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the SLSA Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat Driver award and a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the applicable units of competency:

Course content:

  • Prepare for rescue boat operation
  • Operate rescue boat
  • Conduct emergency drills
  • Conduct rescue boat search and recovery
  • Recover and restore vessel
  • Determine current location, destination and resources
  • Determine and plan a safe course
  • Navigate to destination
  • Return to home port
  • Complete post navigational activities
  • Maintain effective communications

Pre-requisites:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 17 years of age on the date of the final assessment
  • Candidates must hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • Candidates must hold a current IRB Crewperson Certificate
  • Candidates must have more than 10 hours IRB crewing experience evidenced by log
  • Candidates must hold the following units of competency:
    • PUASAR009B Participate in an aquatic rescue operations
    • PUAEME001B Provide emergency care
    • PUAOPE002B Operate communication systems and equipment
    • PUACOM001C Communicate in the workplace

Course Duration:

Silver Medallion IRB Driver course duration is approximately 8 – 10 sessions

Assessment:

Candidates will be required to demonstrate competency in all elements in the workplace. They will be required to complete activities that may include oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations of skills and performing scenarios.

Proficiency:

For this award to remain current, candidates must perform a proficiency check prior to 31st December each year.

Training/assessing:

Trainers and assessors for this award must be endorsed to train/assess IRB.
