IRB Crew Certificate

Award Summary:

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

Unit/s of Competency:

There are no units of competency aligned with this award.


On successful completion the participants will receive the SLSA Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew Certificate.

Course content:

  • Demonstrate pre-operation procedures
  • Crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat
  • Perform emergency drills
  • Conduct IRB rescues, search and recovery
  • Demonstrate post operation service and storage


  • Candidates must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of the final assessment
  • Candidates must hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

Course Duration:

IRB crew course duration is approximately 8 – 10 sessions

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Candidates will be required to demonstrate competency in all elements in the workplace. They will be required to complete activities that may include oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations of skills and performing scenarios.


For this award to remain current, candidates must perform a proficiency check prior to 31st December each year.


Trainers and assessors for this award must be endorsed to train/assess IRB.
